Fundraiser A Huge Success

Rochester, NY (June 18, 2015) — The City of Rochester Animal Services and the Verona Street Animal Society (VSAS) held their ninth annual benefit, The Fast & The Furriest® Presented by Buckingham Properties, on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 184 Verona Street and Brown Square Park. “This is our biggest annual fundraiser and it was another success,” said Chris Fitzgerald, Director of Animal Services and VSAS board member. “The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and funds for Animal Services and with the collective efforts of an army of volunteers and VSAS board of directors, combined with support from our sponsors, individual and team fundraisers, and in-kind donors, we accomplished those goals and are so grateful to everyone involved.”

The event began with 10K and 5K races with staggered starts at 8 a.m. and 8:15 a.m., respectively. The free rabies clinic began at 9 a.m. and microchips identification was available for $20. After the races and awards ceremony, the dog walk kicked off around 10:30 a.m. Pet contests included categories for furriest dog, best wag, best dog trick, dog-owner look alike, and fastest hot dog bobbing canine. The Play Yard at Animal Services was open for dogs of attendees to complete an agility course and a demonstration of dog playgroups were held in the afternoon to showcase how this important program is helping provide exercise, socialization, and enrichment for shelter dogs to increase their adoptability and enhance their wellbeing. Local musician Travis Fitch delighted participants and spectators with acoustic rock throughout the day. Local food trucks and food carts provided a variety of options from traditional hots and hamburgers to gourmet mac and cheese, wraps, fried dough and ice cream
